RECOMMENDED HANDLING PROCEDURES:
Wear gloves and eye protection while handling the tablets or solution and avoid spills.
1. Prepare DL Test Solution
a. Using a 50ml dropper bottle add one Dichlorophenolindophenol tablet and 30ml of distilled water.
b. Allow the tablet to completely dissolve by letting the solution sit overnight.
c. Once the tablet is completely dissolved, ensure the solution is Royal Blue in color. If not discard
and prepare a new solution using a new tablet and clean 50ml dropper bottle.
2. Vitamin C Test
a. Into a clean test tube add 5 drops of the blue DL Test Solution. If the blue color fades in the test
tube then discard and start with a new, clean test tube.
b. To the test tube add urine, one drop at a time, and count the drops required to turn the blue
solution to clear.
c. Refer to the table (included with test) for results interpretation.
1) Reference: The Reliability of the Method for Estimating Vitamin C by Titration against 2:6
-DPLP, Harris and Olliver, University of Cambridge, 1941.
2) Assuming standard conditions and an endpoint equal to 0.52875mg of Ascorbic Acid for 5 drops of the prepared DPLP solution.
Other oxidizing agents (besides Vitamin C) in the urine may also reduce the DPLP and cause a falsely high result.
